Enteq Technologies has launched its latest innovation in downhole drilling technology: the Hop series. The communications device, which can be used in conjunction with The SABER Tool or fitted with existing rotary steerable systems (RSS) and measurement while drilling (MWD) technology, allows drilling contractors access to real time data to enhance drilling operations.
The Hop series also removes the need for hard connectors and dedicated collar lengths and enables LWD to be run below MWD equipment rather than above. In turn, this allows operators to enhance tool life, save time, money, and therefore, reduce emissions and environmental risk associated with timely drilling activity.
The Hop series can provide drilling contractors and operators with:
- accurate and real time data
- increased confidence of equipment operation
- confirmation of receiving control commands
- fleet optimisation – by integrating additional equipment with existing fleet
The Hops were initially designed for the SABER RSS system, but their modularity allows for multiple applications, from wireless MWD / LWD communications, to real-time RSS information and DL confirmation. The system utilises drop-in modules consisting of a transmitter fitted above the RSS, and a receiver in the MWD string. The RSS then connects with the MWD string to offer seamless integration and send real-time drilling data to the surface.
The communication system allows drilling contractors and operators to combine high-performance drilling with accurate control, feeding back data to provide assurances that those commands – such as changes in tool-face – have been received.

Through accessing data during downhole drilling activity, drilling contractors can make better decisions about drilling activity with real time data, lending itself to more efficient operations and increased confidence.
The system uses existing concepts and trusted technology to provide assurance on the value of the data they are receiving and negates the need to delay decision-making following analysis of data or downhole testing.

- MicroHop for ranges up to 30cm / 1ft
- MegaHop for ranges up to 5m / 16ft
- GigaHop for ranges up to 25m / 80ft
The MicroHop and MegaHop have been developed alongside the SABER Tool to meet market demand for standard equipment set up and we are actively working on a future version that will be suitable for ranges up to 25m / 80ft.
